The 1st European Congress on Common Land took place in Portugal in September last year (2011). More than 400 delegates from different regions of Portugal, Spain, Italy and Scotland attended. It was the first event of its kind to bring together people working on common land and natural resources issues including academics, technical experts, environmentalists, researchers, association representatives and farmers.

A key output from the meeting is to create a working group within the European Coordination – Via Campesina (EC-VC) to raise awareness in Brussels about common land and ensure that they are supported in the new reform of the CAP - Common Agricultural Policy.
