
The April 2013 edition of the National Farmers Union magazine British Farmer and Grower has an article about common land and the work of the Federation of Cumbria Commoners. It discusses the origins of common land and commoner's rights and presents the work of the Federation of Cumbria Commoners. It asks if the commons are still needed today?
In fact many farms in the uplands are heavily reliant on common land for summer grazing of ewes and lambs alongside the environmental stewardship payments awarded to common land management. In the view of hill farmer Dave Smith, Chairman of the Federation of Cumbria Commoners, the commons are an integral and valuable part of his farming system. However looking forward he sees the existence of traditional farming systems on commons as remaining very fragile. The low economic return from hill farming and changing lifestyle expectations make it harder to convince upcoming generations of their worth.
