The Foundation for Common Land along with Robin Milton, chairman of the NFU’s upland committee, the Federation of Cumbria Commoners, the Dartmoor Commons Council and other hill farmers' organisations have lobbied hard to get the Moorland payment increased and we have been successful.
Farmers in England who operate within the moorland line will receive approximately £57/hectare in direct payments under the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), Defra Secretary Owen Paterson has announced. This is an approximately 90 per cent increase to the moorland rate. The Severely Disadvantaged Area (SDA) and lowland rates are set at around £200/ha. These paymenst will start in 2015.
This is great news for common land as 96% of upland commons are above the morland line.
